Advantages of Plastic Spray Paint

01/

Ease of application
One of the standout features of spray paint is its ease of application. Traditional painting methods often require a variety of tools, including brushes, rollers, and trays. This can make the process cumbersome and time-consuming. Spray paint simplifies this by providing an all-in-one solution that can be applied directly from the can.

02/

Wide range of colors and finishes
Spray paint offers a vast array of colors and finishes, giving you the flexibility to achieve the exact look you desire. Whether you’re looking for a glossy, matte, or metallic finish, spray paint has you covered. This versatility makes it an excellent choice for a wide range of projects, from home decor to automotive repairs.

03/

Environmental considerations
In today’s world, environmental sustainability is more important than ever. Many traditional paints contain harmful chemicals that can negatively impact both the environment and your health. Spray paint, particularly those developed with eco-friendly formulations, offers a safer alternative.

04/

Cost-effectiveness
When it comes to cost, spray paint is often more economical than traditional paint. The all-in-one nature of spray paint eliminates the need for additional tools and supplies, reducing overall project costs. Furthermore, the efficient application process means that you use less paint, saving you money in the long run.

Types of Spray Painting in Plastic Spray Paint Process

Acrylic Spray Paint
Spray paints based on acrylic compound are very common and can be used on all types of plastics. They bond well without lifting in vapors and dry quickly.

Epoxy Spray Paint
Epoxy spray paints are perfect for demanding applications on ABS items because they provide a tough, scratch-resistant finish and chemically bond with ABS surfaces.

Enamel Spray Paint
Enamel spray paints have glossy finishes that improve the look of plastic. These paints are tough and will not fade, chip, or wear-out easily.

Paint-and-Primer Spray Paint
Additonally, paint and primer in one spray paints save users that prepare time when dealing with porous surfaces such as plastics.

Polyurethane Spray Paint
Used externally on ABS, polyurethane spray paints bond protectively while being extremely UV resistant.

Plastic Spray Paint Process Steps
1

Priming

Apply your high quality primer to the plastic part from around 6-7 inches away. During this stage, you should be wearing a mask to protect from the chemicals in the primer. For the best application, keep the paint can in an upright position when spraying and apply three or four coats, waiting 15 minutes between each one to allow each layer to dry.

2

Painting

When painting on plastic, more coats of paint might be required for drastic colour changes like covering black parts with white paint. However, the same process can be followed as with the primer regarding how far away the paint can be held.

3

apply the lacquer

Clear lacquer should then be applied over the paint with four or five coats. Again, leave each layer to dry for around 15 minutes before adding another. Once you’re satisfied with the finish, it’s recommended to leave this to dry for a few hours before removing the masking tape or reattaching the plastic trim.

4

finish off with polish

The final step is to take a clean microfibre cloth and polish the plastic part. This will bring out the shine and remove any loose debris, leaving you with a perfectly smooth surface.

FAQ

Q: How to properly spray paint plastic?

A: To properly spray paint plastic, clean and lightly sand the surface to remove the glossy coating, then wipe away all dust. Apply a primer or adhesion promoter specifically designed for plastic, followed by multiple thin, even coats of your spray paint, holding the can about 10 inches away and sweeping back and forth. Finish with a clear coat if desired and allow ample drying time for a durable result.

Q: Does spray paint for plastic really work?

A: Yes, spray paint is good for plastic, but you must use the right type and properly prepare the surface for the best results.

Q: How to keep spray paint from chipping off plastic?

A: To prevent spray paint from chipping off plastic, it's crucial to thoroughly clean, lightly sand, and use a plastic primer. After applying the paint, a clear coat is essential for protection, and the paint should be applied in light coats to ensure even drying.

Q: Do I need to prime plastic before spray painting?

A: You can spray paint plastic without a primer, but it is not recommended for a durable finish. Skipping primer will likely cause the paint to peel, chip, or flake off over time because standard spray paint doesn't adhere well to the smooth surface of plastic. The best options are to use a "spray paint for plastic" or an all-in-one paint that includes a primer, or to use a plastic-specific primer before applying your paint for a long-lasting result.

Q: Why isn't my spray paint sticking to plastic?

A: Usually when paint isn't sticking to a surface, it is because the paint has nothing to “grab” onto. Scuffing up the glossy finish with 1,000-grit sandpaper or lightly with an SOS pad will help. Adhesion promoter will also help. After scuffing, wipe the surface with a degreaser.

Q: How long does it take spray paint to cure on plastic?

A: Spray paint takes about 30 minutes to an hour to dry to the touch on plastic, but it requires 24 to 48 hours to fully cure and harden. The specific drying time depends on the paint type, temperature, humidity, and surface preparation.
